Etymology
Meaning: adjective deriving from the group συλᾶω, 'strip off, pillage, plunder', σύλαι, 'spoils'. The name is attested epigraphically in Crete and Cyrenaica in the Hellenistic and Roman periods, but is also found in a list of names from the 9th century in Theognostos the Grammarian (Masson 1990, pp. 166–170).
